Deputy Head of Primary - Meadow Springs (Issue 11, 2023)
Dear Parents and Carers
I've always been passionate on student voice and agency, and design thinking. Our students are our future and I must say I feel encouraged by what I have observed.
On 3 August, eight students attended the 2023 Rotary Four Way Test speaking contest, having polished their three minute speech on an issue they were passionate about. They worked hard with their teachers and myself, taking on all feedback given to them.
Mia Anastazjew: The benefits of Art
Maggie Moore: Expectations on Women
Rosalie Smith: Passions and Wellbeing
Abby Pedder-Newman: Hunger and Malnutrition
Kona Goard: Disorders and Labelling
Will Osborne: Discrimination
Chloe Germano: How to understand your emotions
Connor Luxton: Gender Equality
Rosalie won first place and will represent us at Rockingham next week, but it's well done to all who entered!
Last Friday, the Year 5s went to the Great Southern Hackathon, where we heard personal stories from change makers, real sustainable projects happening in our local community and application of Robots from one of our Frederick Irwin parents too (Antonio Morais)!
My favourite moment was meeting #Dingo the robot k9 from Alcoa. I was lucky enough to be a judge on the Saturday too where some of our Irwinians (Austin Kielman, Daniel Conzatti Spalenza, ElizabethCass, (Lizzie)Wilson-Smale and Lexie du Plessis) were embracing the design process to address some local issues through some rather exciting inventions!
