School Sport WA Champion Schools Hockey

Sports Updates Monday, 27 June 2022

Frederick Irwin Anglican School had a Years 7 to 9 mixed team participate in the School Sport WA Champion Schools Hockey on Thursday 23 June. The team were in a pool with Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Como and Carine.

The first game was against Bunbury where we played in a very even game but unfortunately coming out with a 1-0 loss. Our team then played a strong Carine Red team who won 5-0 followed by the Hockey Specialist School who won the day in a convincing manner.

Our students stayed extremely positive throughout the day and were a great, if slightly inexperienced, bunch. We then progressed into the 7th vs 8th play off game against Carine Blue team from the other pool.

This game was a great game, with both teams attacking and defending at times. Having gone 1-0 up towards the middle of the game, by the end of it we were trailing 1-2.

Finally, after a great team goal finished off well by one of our youngest members we drew level and managed to get our first result of the day. Both teams were happy with a draw, with our team having learnt a number of vital Hockey messages throughout the day.

The students were exceptionally well behaved, well mannered and played each game with great sportsmanship and FIAS spirit. They were also joined for Match 1 and 2 by a current Kookaburras player, James Collins, who was open to speaking to them about Hockey and his journey.

James made his debut for the Kookaburras this year against Malaysia and was cheering along our students from the dugout, which was well received by all.
As always, the students represented FIAS with pride and fantastic sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the players for their determination and enthusiasm given all day in, at times, some wet conditions.

Squad – Alyssa Wu, Sienna Dunning, Mackenzie Moody, Oriana Campbell, Logan Dunning, Isabella Morrisey, John Rule, Sophie Taylor, Trent McLennan, Ross Bain, Toby Officer, Edwina Wallace, Josh Venables, Cassidy Moody, Joe McNear, Sam McGinn.
