Year 2 and Year 6 Reading Buddies Initiative

Primary School Tuesday, 14 May 2024

On Friday 3 May, Mrs Smith organised and assisted in pairing each Year 6 student with one of our Year 2 students who currently reads daily with an educator. The Year 6 students were then taught to administer a timed, one-minute nonsense word assessment with their assigned student, followed by listening to them read their decodable book and signing the reading log.

At 8:30am, the Year 6 students gathered at 2M1 to collect their assigned student and reading folder. They then proceeded to our wet area or mini lab, where teachers and EA staff were already engaged in listening to reading, to complete the reading task with their assigned student. The importance of their relationship with our younger students was emphasised and students were encouraged to offer praise and high-fives. Additionally, they were encouraged to keep an eye out for their buddy on the playground. This project will continue, and expand into the other Year 2 classes at a later stage.

Mrs Smith said: "It has been a great, quick way for our struggling readers to complete a reading task every morning and we really appreciate the help offered by the Year 6 students."

Each of the students demonstrated genuine enthusiasm for this initiative. They are all to be commended for their efforts and future assistance.

Well done!
